Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law)
The German Purity Law, the oldest food regulation in the world, was decreed by Duke Wilhelm IV in 1516. It states that beer brewed in Germany can only contain water, hops and malted grain. Yeast was not known at the time, it has since been added to the list. Hence no sugar, preservatives or flavours are added.
