BRISBANE LIEDERTAFEL/LIEDERKRANZ MIXED CHOIR

The choir was founded by Willi Kortz and Eddie Neuhaus in 1998 after many requests by interested singers to form a mixed choir.

The choir started out with 17 members and has now swelled to 45 members and is still growing. The first public performance was held at the “Lufthansa Ball” at the Brisbane German Club in September 1998, followed by Christmas Carols at the City Hall in 1998 and 1999. The Choir held their first Annual Concert in 1999 and their first Christmas Concert at the Club in 2000.

In 2003, the men from the Liedertafel choir joined forces and are now part of the Mixed Choir. In 2007 the Choir changed their name to reflect this union and is now known as “Brisbane Liedertafel/Liederkranz Mixed Choir” in honour of the Brisbane Liedertafel’s 125th Birthday.

The musical Director, Leo Keller, has a wide range of musical experiences both as a conductor and as a soloist. Leo sang solo roles in major works with various orchestras. Leo also took leading roles in productions of the Light Opera Co. of Qld. He has formed and conducted numerous choirs in his lifetime and now concentrates on maintaining the standards of the Brisbane Liedertafel/Liederkranz Mixed Choir.

The Choir’s piano accompanist, Olga Lipsky, who joined the Choir in 2000, is a recently retired Music Librarian at Griffith University’s Conservatorium of Music.

The Choir also performs at nursing homes when requested and participates every 3-4 years at the Sängerfest event held around Australia. There are between 15-17 German Choirs coming together to participate in these great musical events.

There is always room for some more enthusiastic singers to join our Choir. It costs $50.00 to join. The choir practices  Tuesday night from 6.30-9.00pm at the Brisbane German Club. Come, have a look and listen!
