Mosel Magic: The Soils of Dr. Loosen
Kick off our new monthly wine series with an exclusive tasting of masterpieces from the world-renowned Dr. Loosen and Villa Wolf estates, by winemaker Ernst Loosen.
Ernst Loosen is a highly acclaimed German winemaker who has been instrumental in restoring the global reputation of Mosel Riesling. Originally planning a career in archaeology, he returned to the Mosel Valley in 1988 at his family’s behest to take over Weingut Dr. Loosen, an estate that had been in his family for over 200 years.
Upon taking the helm, Loosen faced significant challenges, including a lack of customers and a mutiny from his vineyard workers. Despite this, he remained committed to his vision, ignoring advice to pull up his 100-year-old, ungrafted vines, which he believed were essential for producing exceptional fruit. He revitalised the estate by returning to traditional winemaking methods, focusing on low yields, organic farming, and minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the unique terroir of the steep slate vineyards to shine through.
Often referred to as the global ambassador for Riesling, Loosen’s influence extends far beyond the Mosel. In 1996, he acquired the Villa Wolf estate in the Pfalz region to produce Pinot Noir and other Pinot varieties. He has also established winemaking collaborations in the United States, including Oregon and Washington, further cementing his status as a visionary in the wine world.
Guiding us through the steep slate valleys of the Mosel and the sun-drenched vineyards of the Pfalz is Matt O’Brien from CellarHand.
